Google's Next-Gen Pixel 9 Might Introduce Advanced AI Assistant 'Pixie'

According to a report from The Information, Google is rumored to be developing a sophisticated Android AI assistant named Pixie, set to debut alongside the Pixel 9 phone. This new assistant is expected to leverage Google's recently revealed Gemini large language model (LLM) to handle "complex and multimodal tasks." For instance, Pixie could be capable of guiding users to nearby stores based on photographs taken with their smartphones.

Exclusive to Google's Pixel devices, Pixie is designed to utilize data from various Google services such as Gmail and Maps. This integration aims to enable Pixie to evolve into a more personalized version of the Google Assistant, offering a tailored user experience. Notably, this seems distinct from Google's previously showcased Assistant with Bard, which debuted at the Made By Google event in October.

If the report holds true, Google's quick adjustments to its AI roadmap are seen as a strategic move to compete with OpenAI. Google recently introduced its Gemini AI model as a response to GPT-4, highlighting it as "the most capable model we've ever built." Furthermore, Gemini is expected to arrive on Android via a new feature named Nano, empowering smartphones with abilities like summarizing conversations and calls offline.

Gemini is touted as an integrated multimodal AI that comprehensively understands various inputs rather than a combination of multiple models. This approach is believed to enhance its ability to interpret and reason across diverse data inputs better than existing multimodal models. With Pixie utilizing Gemini's capabilities, it's anticipated to be a more advanced personal assistant compared to Google Assistant. Additionally, Gemini will power the next iteration of Bard, Google's AI chat assistant.

However, Google's expansive array of AI offerings—such as Pixie, Bard, Gemini, Gemini Nano, Gemini Pro, and the upcoming Gemini Ultra—might be overwhelming for consumers to grasp. In contrast, OpenAI's approach appears relatively straightforward with GPT-4 as its LLM, ChatGPT as the chat assistant, and DALL-E as the image generator. Google's complex product lineup might pose challenges for consumers in keeping up with its diverse AI family.
